Threats to Hearing Aids
February 15, 2019Hearing loss becomes a thing of the past once you get hearing aids. With proper care and precaution, your hearing aids can help improve all aspects of your life for the rest of your days. Take good care of your hearing aids so that they can take good care of your hearing needs.
One of the primary elements that can permanently damage your hearing aids is water. Any form of moisture that creeps into your hearing instruments can damage the delicate circuitry or cause the receiver or microphone to malfunction. As a result, you may experience static sounds, clogged tubing, or even corroded batteries.
To eliminate any potential damage from sweat, water, and humid environments, make sure you use a dehumidifier at the end of the day to get rid of any trapped moisture. Always store your hearing aids in an air tight container to prevent any further moisture from creeping in from the environment.
Another major threat to your hearing aids is excessive temperatures in the environment. Too much heat or cold can cause permanent damage to your hearing devices. This is why it is important to keep your ears warm with earmuffs or hats when you go out in cold weather. In hot weather, try to stay out of the direct sunlight while wearing your hearing aids, and store your hearing aids away from sunlight when not in use.
You may even damage your hearing aids accidentally by dropping them. You can prevent accidents by being careful while wearing, removing, and cleaning your hearing aids. Always operate your hearing aids in safe environments such as on the bed or near the dresser. Remember to place a dry, clean towel on any hard surface while changing hearing aid batteries. Always store your hearing aids in special cases that have a soft lining or are cushioned, to avoid damage from being bumped around while in storage.
Keep your hearing aids away from cosmetics since these too, like water, can damage the circuitry and cause your hearing aids to malfunction. This includes perfume, lotion, shaving cream, hairspray, and any other cosmetic that may interfere with the proper functioning of your hearing aids.
Always store your hearing aids away from the direct reach of pets as well as small children. Hearing aids may pose a choking hazard to pets and babies while also resulting in damage to the hearing aids themselves, so keep them safely stored away in a cupboard when they are not in use. Hearing aid batteries are extremely corrosive and are very dangerous when swallowed.
Take good care of your hearing aids to make sure you can make the most out of your hearing experience for all your days to come.
